Thomas Hartley, OneHope’s Vice President of the Final Third, works as part of the team to bring God’s Word to the most unreached people groups left in the world. "We will use this new translation as an inroad to communities where there has never been a church,” Hartley said. "We are also working on an intentional discipleship element that will lead to church planting. Without discipleship, new churches can’t thrive. Most of the Punjabi speakers are in frontier areas where no mission organizations have made inroads. So, it is vital we disciple new believers.”
Most people in the Punjab Province practice the religions of Islam, Hinduism, or Sikhism. Only 1.6% of the people living in Pakistan consider themselves Christian, and only 2.4% in India. Yet, opposition to the spread of the Gospel has been growing in these countries.
For this reason, outreach in India and Pakistan happens on a smaller scale,
with trained teams from local churches distributing materials to neighbors’ homes or providing resources to local churches. The team relies heavily on digital and film- based programs to not only help protect individuals from persecution, but also for the ease of sharing information in a digital-discipleship age. In both India and Pakistan, the main form of communication and learning in remote areas is auditory. A high percentage of people cannot read or write, but they love to tell stories. Because of this, the churches are most excited about the Bible films that will now be available in their language to use as tools for evangelism and discipleship.
The translation team has completed all of the New Testament and the first five books of the Bible, with plans to complete the Old Testament by 2026. They will also be translating the Gospels in Western Punjabi and mobilizing it all in print, digital, and film. To place the Bible into the hands of the people in these areas, $316,000 is still needed to complete the project.
We invite you to be a part of bringing the Living Water to these unreached areas. The name “Punjab” stems from the five rivers that flow through the region—Punj (Five); Aab (Water). Your generosity helps bring the Bible into the world’s “final third,” to communities who have never heard the life-giving message of Jesus in their own language.
